Suffolk Cottage Redesigned for Family Living
With decades of experience in property development, Mr Robertson knew exactly what he wanted when it came time to create his own forever home. But finding the right opportunity wasn’t straightforward.

“We’ve found Mumford & Wood to be a considerate, well-run, and efficient business — and the aftercare has been amazing!”
The Project
With decades of experience in property development, Mr Robertson knew exactly what he wanted when it came time to create his own forever home. But finding the right opportunity wasn’t straightforward.
“We looked at countless properties over nearly a year, but nothing quite aligned with what we had in mind,” he recalls. “Just when we were about to settle for something more conventional, our estate agent called with a rare find - an unmodernised bungalow on a beautiful plot.”
Seeing the potential immediately, Mr and Mrs Robertson moved quickly to secure the site. What followed was a carefully planned, personally led journey to design and build their dream home from the ground up.
“I’d always wanted to design and build my own house, and this was the perfect opportunity.”
Planning was approved soon after purchase, and the couple began an extensive new build project. Every detail was considered, from orientation and layout to the choice of materials. One of the earliest and most important decisions was the specification of high-performance timber windows and doors.
“We’ve always preferred the aesthetic and sustainability of wooden windows and doors,” Mr Robertson explains. “After researching several options, we invited three companies to present samples. Mumford & Wood stood out clearly. The craftsmanship, customisation options and personal service we received gave us total confidence.”
Despite the delays caused by the pandemic, the Robertsons completed the build in late 2021, with all exterior landscaping finalised in autumn 2023.
“It’s taken over four years, but the result has exceeded everything we hoped for. The windows and doors from Mumford & Wood have added such elegance and character, and we’re absolutely delighted.”
Feature Entrance Door
At the heart of the home is a beautifully crafted Framlingham-style Entrance door with sidelights, finished in a tone inspired by Farrow & Ball’s Skimming Stone. Sandblasted glass with a clear border adds subtle texture, while polished stainless steel hardware from Coastal completes the refined look.
Triple Sash Windows
Positioned at the front of the home, the Triple Sash windows in Pebble Grey enhance symmetry and create strong sightlines that elevate the façade. These traditional, timber-framed windows echo classic British architecture while delivering outstanding modern performance.
Slim Sash Windows
Used throughout the rest of the home, Slim Sash windows in the same Pebble Grey finish offer an understated style and a cohesive aesthetic. Their proportions and elegant detailing were the ideal choice to complement the home’s timeless design.
French Doors
To the rear, a pair of French doors open out onto a thoughtfully landscaped patio area. With 18mm astragal glazing bars in a unique formation, they provide a charming focal point and flood the interior with natural light.
Stable Door
For the new outbuilding on the plot, a classic Wardour-style stable door in Pebble Grey was the perfect finishing touch, adding countryside charm and practical access in one.
