New Timber Windows & Doors Enhance 1890s Farmhouse
Nestled in the Hertfordshire countryside, this striking farmhouse, originally built in the 1890s, has evolved over more than a century, with multiple extensions added throughout its lifetime

“The new windows have got rid of the terrible draughts we used to suffer from with the original windows, and this has made such a difference to our comfort levels.”
The Project
Nestled in the Hertfordshire countryside, this striking farmhouse, originally built in the 1890s, has evolved over more than a century, with multiple extensions added throughout its lifetime. The latest transformation, carried out by current homeowner Mrs Ballard, was perhaps the most significant yet.
"We've lived here for around four years," she explains, "and during that time, we identified a range of updates we wanted to make, renovations throughout the property, a rear extension, and replacing all the windows and doors."
Working with a trusted contractor and in close collaboration with the local authority, the Ballards were required to install replacement windows and doors that matched the original features in design and appearance.
Mumford & Wood were recommended for their expertise in manufacturing premium timber Sash windows and doors that comply with traditional building requirements without compromising on energy efficiency or finish.
Sash Windows
Timeless timber Sash windows were installed throughout the home, finished in elegant 'Oyster White' and complemented by polished brass hook fasteners and sash lifts. The design features 18mm astragal glazing bars to recreate the authentic styling of the period.
Triple Sash Windows
To enhance the rear extension while maintaining the historic charm, Triple Sash windows were specified, featuring fixed outer sashes and a central slider. This classic configuration mirrors popular design elements from the late 19th century and ties the new build elements seamlessly into the original architecture.
Feature Entrance Door
Making a strong visual statement, a bespoke variation of the Lydford Entrance door was commissioned for the main entryway. Designed with eight equally sized timber and glazed panels, the door is finished in rich 'Chrome Green', a perfect complement to the ivy-covered façade. Coastal range polished brass PVD hardware completes the look.
French Doors
In keeping with the heritage feel of the farmhouse, traditional timber French doors were chosen to open up the new extension to the garden. Also finished in 'Oyster White' and paired with a polished brass Regent handle, they echo the elegance of the sash windows and front door while enhancing the indoor-outdoor connection.
