Contemporary Essex Self Build Combines Form & Function
What was once a neglected house set on a stunning 9-acre plot has now been completely reimagined as a remarkable family residence, thanks to the vision and dedication of homeowner and self-builder Kevin Woodberry.

“We are very happy with the products and the support provided by the Mumford & Wood team throughout the project.”
The Project
What was once a neglected house set on a stunning 9-acre plot has now been completely reimagined as a remarkable family residence, thanks to the vision and dedication of homeowner and self-builder Kevin Woodberry.
“Following the demolition of the original property, we took the opportunity to reposition the new house in a more favourable location on the land,” Kevin explains.
With a blank canvas and full creative control, Kevin designed a classically styled home that blends red brickwork with contrasting dark cladding, creating a balanced, timeless exterior. To complement the traditional architecture, he specified timber sash windows, grand entrance doors, and French doors with Gothic arched glazing bars, all from Mumford & Wood.
“We were going for a traditional look, and Mumford & Wood were recommended by our local merchant as the go-to choice for authentic heritage styling. They were absolutely right.”
Kevin’s meticulous approach is evident in every detail of the property. From material finishes to glazing configurations, the house radiates character and craftsmanship, creating a home that feels both well-established and exquisitely new.
The quality of his self-build did not go unnoticed: the project was nominated for Self-Build of the Year at the prestigious LABC Awards. It was a privilege for the Mumford & Wood team to support a build of such calibre.
Sash Windows
Traditional timber Sash windows in a dual colour scheme, Cream externally and Signal White internally, were installed throughout. Each window features 18mm Georgian glazing bars, decorative sash horns, and polished chrome sash hardware for a refined, elegant finish.
Feature Entrance Door
To match the scale and grandeur of the new home, a bespoke Hadleigh-style front door was selected. Complete with a toplight and side flag windows, the door is finished in Grey Blue with a Cream frame to echo the Sash window detailing and tie the façade together.
French Doors
At the rear, a statement set of French doors with a toplight mirrors the sash window finish. The doors include beautifully crafted arched Gothic glazing bars, a unique feature that enhances both light and architectural interest.
Balcony Entrance Doors
For the master bedroom’s private balcony, two Single Entrance doors were chosen, each featuring the same arched glazing bar detail used in the French doors. This consistency across the home reinforces the traditional design intent and creates a visually unified scheme.
