Agricultural Barns Transformed into Desirable Rural Homes
Over the course of 15 months, David Chidwick of L&L Homes oversaw the transformation of a collection of agricultural barns and outbuildings in rural Petworth into a series of elegant, character-rich family homes.

“I’ve used Mumford & Wood products a number of times now and always will—when the project allows.”
The Project
Over the course of 15 months, David Chidwick of L&L Homes oversaw the transformation of a collection of agricultural barns and outbuildings in rural Petworth into a series of elegant, character-rich family homes.
As a long-standing customer of Mumford & Wood, David didn’t hesitate when choosing a supplier for the windows and doors.
“We were told early on by the planning authority that a timber or oak-effect finish would be required to remain sympathetic to the barn-style architecture and rural surroundings. That made Mumford & Wood the natural choice,” he explains.
All products for this conversion were finished in a rich Dark Oak stain, perfectly meeting the planners’ brief and bringing warmth and authenticity to each home. David even retained one of the dwellings for himself.
“I’ve always been impressed by the product quality,” he adds. “But I also want to highlight how smooth the service has been, right through to aftercare. The team, especially Sarah, have been incredibly helpful, and the engineers are always knowledgeable. That level of support really builds confidence, not just for me but for the new homeowners too.”
Patio Doors
Several properties in the development feature timber Patio doors finished in a Dark Oak stain. Easy to operate and a pleasure to use, these doors help create a sense of flow between indoor and outdoor living spaces.
Entrance Doors
Each new home is equipped with a Pomeroy-style timber Entrance door, with variations such as fully glazed sidelights to complement the architecture. These doors add depth and detail to the façades, enhancing the barn conversion aesthetic.
Flush Casement Windows
To maximise natural light and maintain the clean lines of the original buildings, Flush Casement windows without glazing bars were chosen throughout. Their timeless look and oak finish help the homes sit beautifully in their countryside setting.
Feature Casement Window
For the largest home on the site, also the only one with a second floor, a stunning oversized feature Casement window was designed as a focal point. Inspired by traditional barn windows, this bespoke piece floods the living space with natural light and adds instant visual impact.
