We are committed to being on hand every step of the way to guide you through each stage with expert advice and practical solutions.
From the initial design phase, our team works closely with you to understand your requirements and vision. We help you make informed decisions on key design elements, including glazing options, paint colours, and ironmongery, ensuring every detail aligns with the character of theproperty and the client’spersonal preferences.
We also provide specialist guidance on compliance and standards. This includes advice on building regulations, planning considerations, and the latest requirements for ventilation, thermal performance, security, and environmental sustainability. Whether your project involves a listed building, conservation area, or a new build, we help you navigate all relevant approvals with confidence.
As the project progresses, we act as a central point of contact to coordinate the manufacturing schedule, delivery logistics, and installation planning, ensuring a smooth and timely process. Our experienced team ensures seamless communication between you, our technical experts, and any contractors involved.
Our goal is to make your journey with Mumford & Wood as efficient and stress-free as possible—delivering crafted timber windows and doors that perform as well as they look.
Surveying
A surveying service from Mumford & Wood involves a professional visit to carry out a detailed assessment and measurement of your window and door openings. This is a vital step before manufacturing bespoke items or proceeding with installation.
During the survey, a specialist from Mumford & Wood will take accurate measurements to ensure a perfect fit for your new timber windows or doors. They will assess all necessary dimensions, including frame depth, sash designs, and internal or external reveals.
Hardware and design features are also considered during the survey. The team will take note of existing fittings such as locks, handles, and hinges, and will ensure that any period or heritage design elements sympathetically replicated in the new units.
Following the survey, Mumford & Wood will provide tailored recommendations. These may include suggestions on timber types, finishes, and glazing options, as well as upgrades to improve performance.
All surveys are conducted with full awareness of current building regulations. For listed buildings or properties in conservation areas, the team can provide advice on compliance and offer suggestions on planning or listed building consent, asrequired.
Traditional Mill and CNC Machining
Each piece of FSC-certified timber is fully traceable throughout the manufacturing process, allowing us to verify the purchase date and source, ensuring complete chain of custody compliance.
For the most exposed components—such as cills, external liners, and meeting rails—we use hardwood or Accoya, selected for their exceptional durability and weather resistance.
The primary substrate throughout our products is laminated and engineered redwood. This material is carefully processed to eliminate knots, splits, resin pockets, and other defects at source, ensuring optimal strength, dimensional stability, and long-term performance.
Our entire production system is powered by one piece of software which integrates every stage from project management input to machine operation. Project data is sent directly to the CNC machinery, significantly reducing the potential for human error. The same system manages all aspects of the workflow—including orders, invoicing, and production—ensuring consistency, control, and full traceability.
In addition, all orders are monitored internally using our in-house tracking system. This follows each job through every department, with checkpoints at each stage to maintain accuracy, accountability, and quality control throughout the process.
Each project undergoes bespoke CNC machining and profiling to meet exact architectural and performance specifications. Our in-house machining centresare equipped with precision tooling designed specifically for the production of window and door frame components. We continually invest in high-performance machinery and custom tooling systems to achieve optimal dimensional accuracy and surface finish.
To maintainconsistent tolerances, all machines are calibrated at regular intervals throughout the production cycle using digital measurement systems. This ensures precision and repeatability across all components. Engineered timber elements undergo rigorous quality control, including dimensional verification, surface integrity checks, moisture content checks, and treatment with a penetrating liquid wood preservative to enhance durability and resistance to moisture ingress.
Every component undergoes final inspection as part of our QA protocol, ensuring it meets dimensional, aesthetic, and performance standards before assembly.
The Joiners Shop
At this stage, frame components are accurately cramped to their final finished dimensions. This is where traditional joinery craftsmanship plays a critical role. Skilled joiners ensure each joint is precisely aligned, secure, and structurally sound. This stage is where cill extensions, decorative embellishments, bespoke profiling, and head drips are crafted and integrated. Unlike the more automated phases of production, this process relies heavily on skilled manual labour. Components are traditionally jointed, scribed, and dowelled by hand, ensuring precision, character, and craftsmanship in every detail.
Every element undergoes a comprehensive quality inspection, including mechanical integrity testing, precision sanding, joint sealing to prevent moisture ingress, and meticulous surface cleaning to ensure a flawless finish. The assembled frame is assessed for squareness, flush joints, and overall fit to ensure it meets exacting standards. Only once every component is confirmed to be perfectly aligned and secure does the frame progress to the next stage of production.
The Paint Shop
The finish and appearance of each frame are treated with the same level of precision and care as the machining and joinery stages. Once assembled, the frames arrive at the paint shop fully prepared and ready for the initial priming process.
A high-performance, microporous spray-applied primer is used to seal and protect the timber, allowing it to breathe while providing excellent protection against moisture. Following application, a quality inspection is carried out to ensure even coverage and strong adhesion. The surface is then carefully de-nibbed between the primer and intermediate coat to maintain a smooth finish.
The full coating process includes four stages—preservative treatment, primer, intermediate coat, and final top coat—each applied to maximise durability, weather resistance, and aesthetic quality. Paint thickness is closely monitored between each stage to ensure a consistent and even finish across all surfaces.
Our advanced spray systems ensure a consistent, professional-grade finish across every component. Clients can choose from a palette of over 40,000 colours, all mixed in-house, along with a full range of wood stains and dual-finish paint options. This allows us to meet both the aesthetic and performance requirements of any project.
Final Assembly & Glazing
Before glazing begins, all frames undergo thorough quality checks to ensure that ironmongery—such as hinges, locks, and handles—fits with precise alignment and operates flawlessly within the frame tolerances. This pre-glazing validation ensures seamless integration of hardware and glazing components.
We offer a wide range of glazing options, including single glazing, heritage glass for conservation applications, and high-performance double and triple glazing units, depending on project requirements. Each glazing type is selected and installed to meet both aesthetic and thermal performance standards.
Our ISO 9001-certified quality management system ensures a structured, traceable, and robust approach to inspection and process control at every stage. Only after all components pass final inspection—verifying dimensional accuracy, surface finish, functionality, and glazing integrity—are the finished products carefully wrapped, labelled, and palletised for delivery.
